G-Clips Installation Details

G-Clips Grating Fasteners

There are several methods that can be used to install G-Clips grating

fasteners. Each method offers differing long-term maintenance abilities for the grating installation.

G-Clips used in installing grating to beam edges use a 1/4-20 hex head cap screw. A 7/16" wrench is needed to properly install G-Clips. They should be tightened to 125 inch-pounds for best use. For comparison, carbon steel saddle clips deform by 65 inch-pounds.

G-Clips are designed for a three-step installation right out of the box.

1. Place into the grating.

2. Slide to the beam.

Bolt must be vertical, and top plate must be flat on the grating surface.

3. Tighten to 125 inch-pounds.

1. Many installations use hand-held nut drivers. Often having a 3/4"

diameter plastic handle, they allow a maximum torque of about 70 inch-pounds to be achieved. Most large jobs require higher productivity and higher installed-torque than can be achieved with nut drivers.

2. Socket wrench / ratchet handles of approximately 8" total handle length allow 100 inch pounds to be achieved fairly easily. Offset-handle Speed Wrenches can greatly reduce installation time in hand methods.

3. Powered drivers offer the best installation method, and give high

productivity and proper installation torque to be easily achieved. Be sure to select a torque setting that provides 125 inch-pounds or less, if the fastener will be reused. Higher setting can cause thread lockage. Female threaded area deforms at about 200 inch-pounds.

4. Faster installation production rates can be achieved with other tool

elements. As an example, one operator who installs large quantities of

grating adds several 12" long extensions under the powered drivers, and a magnetic insert in the 7/16" socket. Used in combination with a nail pouch holding a quantity of clips, the installation person can work without kneeling.

5. Installation torque audit should be conducted if any doubt exists about installed torque on a project. Recommended use is an inch-pounds torque wrench (Armstrong 64-041 can be used) with the several extensions. This allows an operator to cover a fair area of grating from a standing position, confirming proper installation torque exists.

6. Grating Fasteners, Inc., recommends that one G-Clip grating fastener be used in every four (4) square feet of grating. A full panel of grating 3" x 20" totals 60 square feet should contain about 15 fasteners, on average, in pedestrian conditions. If vibration or structural movement is anticipated, more fasteners should be used.
