DESCRIPTION
Performance Testing of Grating Fasteners
FOR and REPORTED TO
Grating Fasteners, LLC
P. O. Box 6438
New Orleans, LA 70174
Purpose of Report: The testing services listed
herein were conducted in an effort to quantify the performance
of several different types of grating fasteners from several
different manufactures.
Method of Testing: Three (3) different types
of tests were conducted during this reporting period- One of
the series of tests employed the use of a National Institute
of Standards calibrated torque wrench to tighten the fasteners
until a failed condition occurred. The second test that was
conducted involved using a National Institute of Standards traceable
calibrated hydraulic ram set in an effort to determine at what
force would a failure of the fastener occur. The third series
of tests involved the use of a shaker table.
The testing was conducted by and or witnessed
by our Staff Engineer Mr. Ken Meyn, P.E. The testing was conducted
at the office of Grating Fasteners Inc., Belle Chasse, LA.
Testing Results: Test Series 1
First, each fastener was tightened
with a calibrated torque wrench to an installation torque of
55 inch-pounds. For the purpose of this testing, this was considered
a "hand snug tight" condition. Using a calibrated hydraulic
ram set and caliper, each fastener was tested until a failed
condition was achieved. Failure is defined as the maximum amount
of load the fastener will hold. Unless otherwise noted, all
bolts used are 1/4 inch - 20 grade 2 ASTM A 307. Deflection
is the measured separation of the grating from the support beam.
The results are an average of two series of tests for each fastener.

Testing Results: Test Series 2
First, each fastener was tightened with the
calibrated torque wrench to an installation torque of 55 inch-pounds
"hand snug tight" condition. Using the torque wrench and caliper,
the torque was increased until a Wed. condition was achieved.
Unless otherwise noted, all bolts used are 1/4 inch - 20 grade
2 ASTM A 307. Failure is defined as the point beyond which further
use would not be possible.

Testing Results: Test Series 3 - Shaker
Table
The shaker table testing device has a 1 inch
stroke (1/2 inch in two opposite directions). The cycle is variable
from 0 to 1000. The fastened grating section tested weighs 56
pounds which is equivalent to an 8 sq. ft. of standard steel
grating. Each fastener was tightened with the calibrated torque
wrench to an installation torque of 55 inch-pounds "'hand, snug
tight" condition, The cycle of the. shaker table was slowly-
increased from 0 to 1000 or a failed condition was observed.
A failed condition is defined as the point at which the grating
loosened or became detached from the shaker table. Maximum cycles
held for 1 minute test duration.
